Study examines causes of medical malpractice

When it comes to health, people generally trust medical professionals to provide them with the highest standard of care. Though the vast majority of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals do everything within their power to help their patients, mistakes can still happen. When they do, they can be deadly. One recent study examined some of the biggest reasons that people have to file medical malpractice claims, and the results may be surprising for Arizona families.

Researchers looked at different cases of medical malpractice in an attempt to determine what the leading causes are for the cases that result in death or permanent disability. At least a third of cases happen due to a diagnosis that is inaccurate or delayed for some reason. A spokesperson for the study said that it is the biggest reason for severe medical errors.

Of those cases in that category, about 75% of them are related to cancer, infection or a vascular event, such as a stroke. The researchers hope that this study will help the medical community understand why a delayed or incorrect diagnosis could occur. They say that they want to work with the health care professionals toward a goal of providing the best care possible for patients.

Though this research is very helpful, it also highlights the fact that medical errors happen all too often. Anyone who is harmed by a medical professional's mistake may not be aware of the options when it comes to a medical malpractice claim. An attorney here in Arizona with extensive experience in litigating personal injury cases is typically the best resource.
